Syria tourism

Syria’s tourism sector shows great potential and the number of tourists who visit the country each year is on the rise. In 1994, over 2 million foreign tourists entered Syria; a 5% increase over 1993. More than one half million visitors were from non-Arab countries and 1.45 million were from the Arab world. The number of American tourists---approximately 10,000 in 1994--is more than double the number of U.S. visitors in 1989. Investment in the tourism sector has increased services revenue to an estimated $1.5 billion in 1993; up from $874 million in 1990.

To encourage private sector as well as foreign investment in Syrian tourism projects, Decision #186 was promulgated in 1986. Incentives include tax exemptions on all tourist projects; tax exemptions on all imports necessary to build tourism installations—provided these imports do not exceed 50% of total investment; and a seven-year corporate tax exemption—after which the tax is paid at 50% of the normal rate. In addition, international standard hotels are granted import licenses for those luxury items not normally allowed.
