Syria Banks
There is only one
institution in Syria which changes money - The Commercial Bank of Syria.
It's the only high-street bank, and also operates exchange booths in city centers
and at airports and hotels. The Commercial Bank maintains branches in most large
towns.
Many foreign currencies and travellers checques are accepted and processed.
Hours vary slightly from branch to branch, but usually they open between 8:00 AM and 9:00
AM and close for the day at around 2:00 PM. At the larger centers, some reopen for
evening hours. Banks are always closed on Fridays.

March 29,
2001 - Parliament approved a bill that allows joint venture banks between the government
and private sector, ending 40 years of government domination in the banking sector, the official
Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
According to the bill tabled by the Ministry of Economy,
Syrians must own at least 51 percent of shares in the private banks. The remainder can be held by foreigners.
State-run banks would continue operating after the law takes effect, SANA reported.
A decision to set up the banks with foreign capital was adopted by Cabinet in January. It still needs
a presidential decree to become a law.
Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Khaled Raad has said
some 50 foreign banks are thought to be interested in setting up Syrian branches.
